Meal Plans
MEAL PLANS
We offer a variety of meal plans to fit your lifestyle. The meal plans operate on a declining balance or debit system. Depending on the plan selected, students begin each semester with a set amount of meal plan dollars or “points”. Students then draw down on their balance as they purchase food. If a student runs out of points they can add additional money throughout the semester. To inquire about meal plan sign-ups or more information, please stop by the Bon Appétit office or the Res Life office.

FOOD ALLERGIES
Serving Students with Food Allergies and Celiac Disease
The dining services team is well-trained in food allergy awareness and offer a number of options for students with food allergies and celiac disease. This includes communication about and modification to existing menu items, special preparation of menu items, and access to special products as agreed upon with students.
Daily menus for each café can be accessed at reed.cafebonappetit.com. Menu items that are appropriate options for most students with celiac disease are labeled as “made without gluten-containing ingredients” and can be filtered to streamline searching using the dietary preferences filter. Top-9 allergens are included in menu names and/or descriptions whenever possible. For more on eating with a food allergy in our café, visit this page. Further questions about ingredients can be answered by our trained managers/chefs on-site.
In addition, Reed College offers Carve, where meals a crafted with food-allergic guests in mind. All options are prepared with care using whole foods without the top-9 allergens plus gluten. This space also serves as an area to keep allergen friendly products such as breads and non-dairy alternatives. If you need additional assistance our team works with students to craft personalized meals meeting their dietary needs.

Try something new this summer and invite these fair-weather guests to your table!
1️⃣ Dandelion greens are edible and highly nutritious! They have a earthy, bitter flavor that mellows when cooked. They can be eaten raw in salad mixes or cooked down with other vegetables.
2️⃣ Huckleberries should NOT be mistaken for a blueberry — the vibes are completely different. As they get darker in color, they get sweeter and have a mild flavor. Use it like you would a blueberry in pies, jams, jellies, and even liquors!
3️⃣ Kohlrabi is the international vegetable of mystery and a staple of a summer farmers` market. With a similar taste and texture to broccoli stems and cabbage (though slightly sweeter!), you can roast, sauté, mash, and even spiralize kohlrabi.
4️⃣ Romanesco is unique due to its structure and earthy and nutty flavor, but it can be prepared like cauliflower or broccoli.
5️⃣ Tomatillos are the least shady nightshade out there. (Well, nightshades aren`t that shady anyway. 😎) With a bright and tangy flavor, cooking them down leads to a sweeter profile perfect for salsas (hey, salsa verde!), soups, and stews.

The buzz on the street is that caffeine hinders hydration. We`re here to bust that myth with, well, science. 🧑🔬
What`s the buzz?
Folks who drink a lot of caffeine note more frequent restroom trips after consuming caffeinated beverages.
What does the science say?
Various studies have analyzed the effects of caffeine pills and caffeinated beverages on hydration, all finding similar conclusions at various levels of caffeine intake:
➡️ Caffeinated beverages add to our daily fluid intake the same way water does.
➡️ High concentrations of caffeine (4-5 cups of coffee) may show mild dehydrating effects.
What`s the takeaway?
Caffeine does have negative side-effects that aren`t related to dehydration such as jitters, affected sleep patterns, and large amounts of sugar in caffeinated beverages.
Consider hydrating with water, unsweetened teas, and spa waters — get other ideas from the post we shared earlier this week! #TheBuzz #CaffeineMythBusted #HydrationScience #CaffeineFacts #StayHydrated

Stay hydrated this summer with these 8 tips from our dietitians — and, no, they aren`t all just "drink water!" 😉
💧 Here’s some water basics before we dive in 💧
You`ve probably heard the guidance eight 8-ounce glasses of water, or 64 ounces per day, but it isn`t a hard and fast rule and depends on the person.
Most folks get 80% of their fluids from beverages and 20% from food.
The key to hydration is unsweetened beverages and foods naturally filled with water like fruits and vegetables.
7 ways to meet your fluid needs:
1️⃣ Make your own spa water by adding fruit, vegetables, and herbs in plain or sparkling water.
2️⃣ Spike seltzer with juice, fresh fruit, or crushed mint.
3️⃣ Sip on unsweetened herbal iced teas.
4️⃣ Enjoy chilled soups.
5️⃣ Swap morning cereal for a smoothie bowl.
6️⃣ Make your own fruit popsicles.
7️⃣ Enjoy a snack of fresh fruits or vegetables.
8️⃣ Try a trendy sparkling water!

Not sure what to do with the overabundance of stone fruits this summer? Here`s your guide to stone fruits! (Swipe through or read on below.)
⁉️ What even is a stone fruit? Simply put, it`s the fruit with a big pit in the center. Commonly known varietals are peaches, cherries, and plums.
🍒 Fun facts! Stone fruits are known as clingstone or freestone, which indicates whether the flesh clings to the pit. Although often grouped into ""berries,"" blackberries and raspberries are considered stone fruits because they are drupes (meaning each ""druplet"" of the berry actually each have their own seed)!
👃 Use your senses. When shopping, look for firm fruit without blemishes and smell it! (The ripest fruits are aromatic.)
Here`s how we use different stone fruits:
1️⃣ Peaches | cobblers, salsas, chutneys
2️⃣ Plums | cocktails and mocktails, tarts, and cordials
3️⃣ Cherries | crisps, pies, cocktail garnish
4️⃣ Nectarines | summer flatbreads, scones, salads
5️⃣ Apricots | tarts, jams, glazes
6️⃣ Blackberries | handpies, fruit leather
7️⃣ Raspberries | sauces, sorbets, dessert bars
